The Festival of Slavs and Vikings is a multi-day historical event held in Wolin, usually at the turn of July and August. It has been organized since 1993 and is one of the biggest events in Europe devoted to the Early Middle Ages.

The festival is not the same as the open-air museum
Every day, the Slavs and Vikings Centre on Ostrów Island operates as an open-air museum that you can visit during the season. The festival is a completely different experience - for a few days, the peaceful settlement turns into a huge historical town full of warriors, craftsmen, musicians, merchants, and reenactors from many countries.
That's when you can best see what life in the Early Middle Ages might have looked like - the huts are full of people, food is being prepared over open fires, workshops are running, and you can hear music and the clash of weapons.
Two parts of the event
The festival includes two main areas:
- the historical part on Ostrów Island by the open-air museum in Recław - battles, tournaments, rituals, workshops, and camp life
- the cultural part on the Błonia by the Dziwna River in Wolin - concerts, a market, stalls, and additional events
The organizers say that around 2,000 reenactors from various countries and tens of thousands of visitors take part.
What can you see and do?
The program is very extensive. You can, among other things:
- watch large battles and warrior tournaments
- see demonstrations of old weapons and armor
- observe blacksmiths, potters, coopers, and other craftsmen at work
- see amber, leather, and wicker processing
- learn about ancient minting
- try archery and javelin throwing
- enter historical camps and see the reenactors' everyday life
- try food inspired by medieval cuisine
- take part in workshops and old games
- listen to lectures and talks about history
- watch rituals inspired by ancient beliefs
- listen to folk and historical music
There are also games, workshops, and activities prepared for children, so it's not an attraction only for adult history fans.
The biggest shows
The biggest crowds are usually drawn by battle reenactments, when hundreds of warriors appear on the field. A large part of the festival is also made up of duel tournaments, archery shows, and events connected with old rituals.
In the evening, the atmosphere changes even more - there's music, campfires, and torchlight, and the whole settlement looks completely different from a regular visit.
2026 edition
The 31st edition took place on July 30-August 2, 2026, under the slogan "Beliefs of the Slavs."
The date and main theme change every year, so before planning your trip it's always worth checking the latest information on the organizer's website.
Tickets and getting there
For the 2026 edition, the prices were:
- 35 PLN - regular ticket
- 25 PLN - reduced ticket
This is a separate festival price list and should not be confused with the regular ticket to the open-air museum.
The historical part takes place at Recław 37, 72-510 Wolin. During the festival, traffic organization changes, parking right next to the open-air museum may be unavailable, and cars are directed to other parking areas in Wolin and Recław.
Good to know
This is a really big event, so it's worth preparing a bit differently than for a normal visit to the open-air museum:
- arrive early - later on, queues and traffic jams build up
- bring comfortable shoes, because you'll be walking a lot on grass, embankments, and uneven ground
- if the weather is nice, it's good to have water and a hat
- for some stalls, it's also worth carrying cash
- if you want to see a specific battle or concert, check the exact daily schedule in advance
- it's worth booking accommodation in Wolin and the surrounding area well in advance
Is it worth it?
If you're even a little interested in history, the Festival of Slavs and Vikings is one of the most unique attractions in the whole region. It's not about looking at exhibits through glass - for a few days you can step into a living settlement, see warriors, craftsmen, and ancient rituals, smell the smoke from the fires, and listen to historical music.
If, on the other hand, you don't like big crowds and prefer to quietly look around the huts and workshops, it's better to visit the Slavs and Vikings Centre on a regular day during the season.
